Doulas are members of a birthing woman or recent mom’s support staff that they may opt to have with them during and/or after birth. A birth doula is present for and immediately after the birth, while a postpartum doula comes into the picture after the baby is born to assist mom and family with the adjustment. For more information about Doulas, you may visit the Doula Organization of North America (DONA) website at www.dona.org.
Postpartum Doula Services
A postpartum doula is another member of support staff that you may opt to have as part of your birth/new mom experience. The main role of a postpartum doula is to help ease the transition of having a new member in the family. Doulas offer support and encouragement as well as very basic help from tips to changing diapers, how to calm a fussing baby, to doing a load of laundry and helping with older children as needed. Doulas are also trained to watch for signs of postpartum depression and to equip new moms and dads to cope with all of the exciting changes in their new family.
